Hasten Message Authentication Protocol for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks

In Vehicular ad hoc network (VANET) vehicles communicates through wireless channels, so there will be variety of attacks. To secure vehicular ad hoc network, deployed Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), and to use Certificate Revocation List (CRL) for managing the revoked certificates. The authentication of received message can be performed by first check if the sender’s certificate is in current CRL, which means checking its revocation status, then, verifying the sender’s certificate, and finally verifying the sender’s signature. The first part of the authentication, which checks the revocation status of the sender in a CRL, which may incur long delay depending on CRL size and employing mechanism for searching the CRL. Since the CRL size is expected to be very large, the delay of checking the revocation status of a certificate include in a received message is expected to be large. In order to avoid the time delay in CRL checking process, it can be replaced by efficient Hasten Message Authentication protocol, which uses novel key sharing mechanism. The calculated key will reduce the delay when compared with Expedite Message Authentication Protocol. Furthermore, it is resistant to common attacks while performing authentication technique employing the conventional CRL. So this method will provide more efficiency during authentication in VANET.
